The Color Pigments Manufacturers Association (CPMA) is currently working on comments to submit to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on its recently published scoping document for Pigment Violet 29 (PV 29). And last week CPMA had an opportunity to speak with a reporter from Chemical Watch, one of our industry trade publications, about this important issue that impacts our members and the color pigments industry.
For those who may not know, primary applications for PV 29 are found in plastics and paints and coatings. It is primarily used as a raw material, or intermediate, to manufacture other color pigments.
CPMA is pleased EPA incorporated information about common uses of PV 29 in the scoping document. These uses were identified for the agency during earlier stakeholder meetings in which our group participated. CPMA also provided information to the agency on PV 29 risk assessments completed by The Ministries in Canada and the European Chemical Agency as part of the PV 29 REACH Registration process. Both governments concluded that PV 29 does not present any human health hazards.
The EPA scoping document, published in June, indicates the agency will seek technical studies on PV 29 that conclude zero human health hazards, as part of its risk evaluation process under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).
EPA set a September 19 deadline for comments on this key issue, and our formal comments on the PV 29 scoping document will be submitted prior to that time.
